Originally named Yi Sung-man, Syngman Rhee was born on April 26, 1875. He was arrested and imprisoned in 1897 for being interested in Western enlightenment ideas and joining reform movements which bitterly criticized the Korean government and teaching those ideas to his students. In that same year he hoped to request assistance from President Roosevelt on helping Kore become independent from Japan
